About
This blog has been set up to help raise money for The James Ferguson Fund, which supports research into the rare eye condition Lebers Hereditary Optic Neuropathy. I have this condition myself and I do an annual fundraiser to support the work of Dr. Chinnery, Newcastle University, who is a world leader in researching this eye condition.
Following on from last summers triathlon success at Tatton Park near Manchester, where we managed to raise £8,500, I decided I needed to go one better if I am to ask for donations again.

So on the 30th April I will be cycling, on a tandem with my friend Beth, round part of Britain taking in about 550 miles in 10 days. Beth is a former work colleague and friend and more importantly the only person I know who is up for crazy trips like these.
The route will be starting in Oldham and taking in 12 places beginning with the letter O, hence Wales beginning a good country to travel through, with panniers on the sides carrying all luggage from clothes to sleeping bags and tent. Should be a challenge!
If you are interested in following the progress of this trip then keep your eye on this blog. This is being updated weekly before we go and every day while we are away.
If you would like more information on Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) then have a glance at the James Ferguson Fund page on the Newcastle University website, which aims to answer some of the basic questions I get:
www.ncl.ac.uk/alumni/jamesferguson
Again all the money raised will be going to the research team at Newcastle University assisting them with their research to identify which is the gene that causes this condition.
Thanks
James

James-
I wanted to congratulate you on your fundraising efforts and thank you for your work. My son Jeremy was recently affected by LHON and has taken a similar approach by raising funds for Dr. Sadun’s research in Brazil. His first event takes place this month with a tandem ride from Santa Barbara to San Diego, California. It would be great to share stories about LHON fundraising!

I forgot to mention that we’ve created a website about Jeremy’s tandem ride and about LHON, at http://web.mac.com/poince/cure
